Top 6 ‘Must do’ things in Hervey Bay

Hervey Bay is a beautiful beachside town located on the coast of Queensland, (a 3-hour drive, north from Brisbane). It’s friendly locals, beautiful beaches and close proximity to Fraser Island make it the perfect destination for a get away, whether it be with family, friends or a special somebody. So here’s our suggested ‘must do’s’ for a trip to one of Australia’s most beautiful and undiscovered destinations, Hervey Bay.

1. Visit The Esplanade

Hervey Bay’s vibrant Esplanade stretches roughly 17km and offers a plethora of shopping, cafes, restaurants and accomodation (so you can pick up your fish and chips along the way). The Esplanade also serves as a walkway and cycling path with plenty of exercise equipment, if that is up your alley. Perfect for a stroll, picnic or family barbie!

2. Fishing

Why not try reeling in your own seafood dinner? Hervey Bay has long been known as one of the best destinations for fishermen and women alike to fish in the beautiful crystal waters. Hervey Bay is surrounded by many Islands, including, Round Island, a short distance away – Woody Island and Fraser Island. Hire a private boat or go on a guided tour. Whatever floats your boat.

3. Whale Watching

Hervey Bay is most famous for its whale watching spots, in fact whale watching is ingrained in the culture of the town. If you are interested in watching this beautiful part of nature unfold before your eyes there are a multitude of options available; a lot of which come with other sightseeing experiences, like watching dolphins or travelling to Fraser Island as a part of their itinerary. Since this is a main tourist attraction the tours are well organised with well built whale watching vessels, perfect for getting a close up view of one of nature’s majestic mammals.

Tasman Venture, Freedom Whale Watch, Quick Cat and Spirit of Hervey Bay are the most popular options so look no further if you’re a moby dick fan (he is a sperm whale so you probably won’t see the likes of him but it was still a good reference alright).

4. Embark On A 4WD Adventure

If you’re feeling really adventurous make the drive to Fraser Island. Make your highway the lovely white sand of Hervey Bay and swap car sickness for the cool ocean breeze in your hair. Never hear the words “are we there yet?” when the drive is just as amazing as the destination. The world is your oyster when you can pull over at any point and have the beach to yourself. What better way to spend your day then driving in the sunshine with the perfect road trip playlist?

5. Day Trip To Fraser Island

Fraser Island the largest sand island in the world and is conveniently located just a short distance from the coast of Hervey Bay. Fraser Island offers a range of sights and activities to explore, sprawling with sand dunes and beautiful freshwater lakes, lush forests and incredible wildlife. Due to its heritage it remains largely untouched by mankind and as a result it’s landscape is pristine, making it a pure escape from the city.

Perhaps the most exquisite sightseeing spot in Fraser Island is at Lake Mckenzie. It is a ‘perched’ lake, which means it contains only rainwater, no groundwater, is not fed by streams and does not flow to the ocean. The sand at the bottom of the lake is pure white silica and the mixed colours of blues and greens are like nothing you have ever seen before. The camping facilities are ample making it a great spot for an overnight trip.

6. Visit The Botanic Gardens

By this point I’ve realised that most of my suggestions involve bodies of water (can you blame a girl). If you you want to have a day away from the water try visiting Hervey Bay’s beautiful Botanic Gardens. Perfect spot for a picnic, stroll or even just to read a book in peace.
